RUGBY Odongo out to replicate coach Bobby’s success at Pirates
Marvin Odongo as a rugby player, was cherished by many until a career-threatening facial injury in 2018 in the Gold Cup game against Kenya that forced him to step back from active rugby.
“The club’s history before Bobby became the coach was all about quick fixing, but his reign has seen stability; he worked with the resources available and made things happen,” Mugabi told Pulse Sports.
“He also defined the Pirates' way of playing rugby and identity, which is a running game.”
For Akampa, coach Bobby’s professionalism and ability to nature and groom players stand out.
“I consider him a leader, many doubted him at the start, but he proved them wrong because he had a good strategy,” he stated.
“He has mentored many young players we see today playing on the national team, like Magomu, Massa, Big Bala, Kisiga etc., so his contribution has been immense.”
With coach Bobby out of the way, the team is now under Marvin Odongo as head coach, and both Bruno Akampa and Jude Mugabi add that Odongo will do a great job.
“Odongo has been working closely with Bobby. Also, he was one of the most intelligent rugby players, so he will steer the Pirates ship well,” Mugabi stated.
Akampa was also on hand to add that coach Bobby had mentored Odongo well and was confident enough in him to deliver.
The Pirates will face the Heathens at Kyadondo when the Nile Special Rugby League returns next weekend.
