Kobs and Pirates are now tied on 70 points, but Kobs maintain top spot with a better points differential.

Stanbic Black Pirates were the biggest winners of Match Day 16 in the Nile Special Rugby Premier League on Saturday.

Their 57-28 win over Plascon Mongers at King’s Park Arena, Bweyogerere, was the only bonus-point win for any of the teams in the top three.

The Sea Robbers wiped the floor with Mongers in the first half, running in eight tries for a comfortable 50-00 lead at the half.

Winger Arnold Atukunda completed his hattrick in the first 40 minutes of the game, while Sydney Gongodyo and Moses Zziwa added a brace each for the hosts.

There was a fightback from the visitor in the second half, but the damage had been done in the first stanza of the game.

Mongers will be impressed by their display in the second half, in which they outscored Pirates 28-07 to cut the deficit.

Ivan Magomu scored six conversions to add to his points tally for the season. At 126 points, the Rugby Cranes captain is the league's top scorer.

Strong Pirates

Having defeated Heathens 08-06 last weekend, Pirates moved closer to the top and will fight for the title with Kobs in the remaining two games.

The victory was enough for Marvin Odongo’s troops to move joint-top with Kobs, who had to hang on for a win against Toyota Buffaloes at Legends.

Brian Makalama’s side led 21-08 after the first half, but a second-half fightback by the Buffaloes ensured there was no bonus point for the hosts.

A close 31-25 win was not enough for Kobs to maintain their one-point advantage over Pirates in the title race.

The two sides are now tied on 70 points, but Kobs maintain top spot with a better points differential.

And with the two sides set to clash in the last game of the season, it is highly expected that the winner of that game will go on to lift this year’s title.

At Kyadondo, Heathens bounced back from last Saturday’s loss to Pirates with a nervy 07-00 win over the visiting Jinja Hippos.
