Kabras have now made it two leg wins in a row, having won the Driftwood Sevens series in Mombasa three weeks ago.

Kabras Sugar RFC are the 2023 Prinsloo Sevens winners after edging Kenya Harlequin 10-5 in a tightly contested encounter played at the Nakuru Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.

It is now the second time in three cup finals that they have emerged victorious, after losing the opening leg in Kisumu to KCB, before making amends with a win against Menengai Oilers  at the Driftwood sevens in Mombasa.

They started brightly, Jone Kubu intercepting Dave Mwaura’s pass to play in Bryceson Adaka for the game’s opening try.

Quins grew in confidence, stifling Kabras and gaining ground but were let down by an unforced error after Cornelius Mokoro had left his markers for dead.

Kabras went into the break with the 5-0 lead.

Kubu then sliced through the Quins defense, touching down as Kabras went 10-0 up and had to survive sustained pressure from their opponents.

Lucky Dewald, on as a replacement for the injured Mokoro, attacked from the breakdown, scoring for Quins who went in pursuit of the match winner, all in vain as Kabras made it two wins from three cup final appearances this season.

Third Place Playoff

In the third-place playoff match, KCB completed the podium with a win over outgoing champions Menengai Oilers.

The Bankers scored their tries through Geoffrey Okwatch, Samuel Asati, Festus Shiasi, and Elvis Olukusi with Brian Wahinya adding one conversion.

Oilers tries came from John Okoth and Denis Abukuse with Geoffrey Ominde adding a conversion.

Tony Omondi’s penalty in sudden death saw Mwamba defeat Strathmore Leos 22-19 to claim fifth place.

The two sides were tied 19-19 at the close of regulation time, Mwamba scoring their points through Steve Sikuta who landed twice and Tony Omondi who also chimed in with two conversions.

Challenge Trophy

Masinde Muliro claimed ninth place and the Challenge Trophy with a 15-12 victory over Daystar Falcons. Paywick Munoko scored two tries with Mugandi Musa adding one for Masinde Muliro. Augustine Owino and Floyd Wabwire scored Daystar’s tries with Clinton Kioko adding a conversion.

In the 13th place final, Kisumu claimed 13th place with a 41-5 win over Western Bulls.

Aggrey Kitoi scored three tries with John Ochar and Elvince Odhiambo landing two tries each. Israel Makokha kicked over two conversions with Walter Ambe adding one. Western Bulls scored a late consolation try.

The series will resume in Nairobi on August 12 and 13, with the Christie Sevens set to take place.
