The 32-year-old stepped down from the role during the world challenger series in South Africa at the end of last month after a five-year stint as team captain, and Wokorach says in Munyani, Uganda has a capable leader.
Heathens and Rugby Sevens star Michael Wokorach has backed his predecessor Ian Munyani for the Rugby Sevens captaincy role.
The 32-year-old stepped down from the role during the world challenger series in South Africa at the end of last month after a five-year stint as team captain, and Wokorach says in Munyani, Uganda has a capable leader.
“I am glad it happened, Ian was my assistant last year, and he also captained the team during the 2019 safari sevens, so I know his abilities, and he can take this team to the next level,” Wokorach told Pulse Sports.
About Munyani settling in well in his new role, ‘Gonya’ added it’s just a matter of time and he’ll be good.
“I know being a leader takes some time, but he will learn; the most important thing here is everyone around him is willing to support him.”
Ian Munyani, who currently plays for Kobs, captained Uganda to a fifth-place finish at the 2021 Safari Sevens in Kenya.

RUGBY I am still here for now – Michael Wokorach clarifies on national team retirement talks
The 32-year-old had, on May 1st, shared a tweet in which he insinuated that he was set to retire as he handed over the captaincy to Ian Munyani; however, in an exclusive interview with Pulse Sports, 'Gonya' says that's not the case.
The 24-year-old’s first immediate assignment will be to ensure the Rugby Sevens defend the Africa Rugby Cup in September.
Michael Wokorach became the Rugby Sevens team skipper in 2018, replacing Eric Kasita, who had travelled to the US for further studies.
