The former Chief Executive's way of working is reported to have brushed the KRU hierarchy the wrong way
Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) sacked its Chief Executive Officer Aggrey Wabulwenyi over less than impressive performance as well as his poor relationship with the hierarchy, Pulse Sports can reveal.
KRU announced Wabulwenyi’s departure through a statement on its website on Sunday, saying he had left by ‘mutual consent’ but those in the know say his fate had already been sealed days ago.
Wabulwenyi, who joined KRU in August 2022, was among a few top officials who remained from the regime of the much-maligned former chairman Oduor Gangla, who was replaced by Sasha Mutai in March.
“They reviewed his performance and it was not impressive,” a source, who requested anonymity, told Pulse Sports.
“He also had problems with a lot of people. He could not relate well with people and his way of working brushed people the wrong way.
“There were a number of times when decisions were made at the last minute, and sometimes without consultations, which did not go down well with the hierarchy at the union.”
The former regime has been blamed for the dipped standards of rugby in the country as well as the low morale among the players.
Kenya Sevens have just suffered relegation from the World Sevens Series while Kenya Simbas have struggled to honour Currie Cup fixtures and these are seen as some of the consequences of the poor management under the past regime who also struggled to attract sponsors.
KRU Director of Rugby Thomas Odundo has replaced Wabulwenyi in an interim capacity as a permanent replacement is sought.
