RUGBY Rugby League wrap: Rams relegated, Pius Ogena equals try-scoring record

Mathematically, Rams cannot collect enough points to survive the knife and will be plying their trade in the lower division next season.

The Nile Special Rugby Premier League is nearing completion, and Kobs and Stanbic Black Pirates lead the way in the race for the title.

The two sides registered big wins on Saturday to stay on course and will have the title destination determined on the last day when the two clash at Legends Rugby Grounds.

But the biggest story of the weekend has to be confirmation of Rams Rugby Club as the club that will go down at the end of the season.

Mathematically, the Makerere-based side cannot collect enough points to survive the knife and will be plying their trade in the lower division next season.

Richard Lumu’s troops fell 18-08 to Toyota Buffaloes at Kyadondo Rugby Club, their 16th defeat of the campaign in what has been a dismal season.

It will be the first time since 2015 that the Rams miss top-flight rugby, but their demise will have the Rhinos celebrating survival yet again.

The other talking point of the weekend has to be Pius Ogena’s hattrick against Makerere Impis to go level on 22 tries with the all-time top scorers of the league.

At 22 tries, Ogena joined an exclusive class that only has former and current teammates Allan Musoke and Justin Kimono.

Musoke set the record in 2009, but Kimono went level on the same number of tries in the 2014 season.

And with a game to play for Ogena, he will have the opportunity to set a new record when Kobs host Pirates in the season finale.

Kobs and Pirates are still tied on 75 points and will face off in a winner-takes-all affair on Saturday.

Saturday results

Buffaloes 18-08 Rams

Heathens 27-11 Mongers

Pirates 55-03 Walukuba

Kobs 57-10 Impis
