Shujaa guaranteed themselves their primary target of getting a top four place at the ongoing Challenger Series tournament in Dubai.

Kenya Sevens head coach Kevin Wambua has expressed his delight at managing to achieve the side’s aim of making the semi-finals following their narrow 22-19 win over Japan in the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2024 Challenger Series in Dubai on Saturday.

Shujaa fought hard with six men to claim the victory and will take on Uruguay in the Cup semi-final on Sunday.

The side aimed at getting a top four finish at the tournament, considering the qualifiers will go down to four teams facing each other in a playoff in order to get back to the World Series.

Speaking after the match, Wambua expressed his delight at having managed to make the semi-finals, and has now revealed the side’s targets for the rest of the tournament.

“I am happy. We have achieved our goal, that was to get to the semi-finals,” Wambua said.

“That was our aim, now that we are in the semis, the aim is to refocus and now see how we can win it.”

Meanwhile, captain Tony Omondi revealed that the side are willing to fight to the very end despite the fact the tournament has been energy sapping for the players.

“I think it boils down to your mental toughness and willingness to go hard one more time because we can’t slack even a little bit,” Omondi said after the game.

“We all know three-day tournaments are tough. It takes a toll on our bodies but that is what rugby is made of!”

Shujaa will be aiming to keep the run going in the remaining three tournaments of the season.
