Shujaa’s date with destiny: Kenya Sevens one win away from World Series return

Kenya Sevens have their fate in their own hands as they take on a familiar foe in a must-win match on Sunday for a chance to seal promotion back to the World Sevens Series.

Kenya Sevens will face a familiar foe in Germany for their most important match so far this year, as they need to win it to secure an immediate return to the World Series.

Shujaa saw their 19-year stay in the top flight come to an end last year but have fought their way back to stay in contention for an opportunity to bounce back at the first time of asking.

Kenya won two of their three group matches in the Grand Final in Madrid, beating Samoa 19-12 in the opening match, losing to Spain 10-5 in the second, before a 36-7 thrashing by Chile.

They have now been paired with Germany in the decisive match which they need to win on Sunday evening (6.20pm) if they are to get back in the World Series next season.

Co-captain Tony Omondi has issued a rallying call to his team-mates to ensure they pull all stops and seal their place in the top flight.

“An important win for us today [Saturday] against Chile. We now turn our focus to the most important game of our weekend as we look to return to the top level of world sevens rugby,” Omondi posted on X.

Germany will not be an easy opponent for Kenya, however, having beaten them 24-12 in the 2024 Challenger Opener in Dubai before they silenced hosts Uruguay at their backyard in the second round in Montevideo in March.

They came into the promotion-relegation playoff on the back of a win in their home leg in Munich which makes Kenya’s task even harder.

However, given the unpredictable nature of sevens rugby, Shujaa will head into the match full of confidence as they just need to ensure they take their chances and avoid mistakes that will hand their rivals opportunities.
