Head coach Tolbert Onyango has echoed that his side stands a chance of defending the title but stresses that all the other sides will not be pushovers at the tournament.

It's now a matter of days until the Uganda Rugby 7s defend their Rugby Africa Men's 7s title on foreign land in Zimbabwe.

Head coach Tolbert Onyango has echoed that his side stands a chance of defending the title but stresses that all the other sides will not be pushovers at the tournament.

"We are in the tournament, so the chances are there, as defending champions," Onyango echoed.

"We know the challenge ahead of us not just from South Africa but other top sides like Algeria, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe and Kenya."

"Algeria came out top in their qualifiers, so they're a solid side, so is Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe, who are physical, not forgetting Kenya, who dropped from the HSBC series, so they'll come out all guns blazing," Onyango added.

Also named on the team is Rhinos centre Davis Shimwa, who trained with the side in 2022 ahead of the Commonwealth Games but didn't make the cut; Onyango asserts that Shimwa has since become a better player.

"We called Davis [Shimwa] to train with the team last year, but he wasn't ready then. He has, however, shown growth in his game, he has put in the work, and he is ready now and deserving of a spot on the team," Onyango told the media after training on Friday.

The tournament, also an Olympic qualifier to Paris 2024 in Paris, France, will run between 16th and 17th September, with Ian Munyani captaining the side assisted by Aaron Ofoyrwoth.
