With the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) elective assembly under a month away, the race for who assumes the top seat of the Union is heating up.
Incumbent, Godwin Kayangwe, is one of two candidates vying for the top seat. While speaking to Nnalubaale Sports, a youtube sports channel, Kayangwe revealed that creating a U20 and University Rugby Leagues is one of his main aims in seeking re-election.
"I want to return and implement the remaining part of my strategy, which was interrupted by COVID-19,” Kayangwe told the YouTube channel.
“We were active for two years instead of the four-year tenure.”
"I want to start an U20 league to enable young players to get exposed before they join the different clubs and national teams; I also want to do the same for universities."
The Stanbic Black Pirates affiliate also stressed the need to support clubs to strengthen their commercial and administrative structures, enabling them to be self-sustaining.
"Our clubs need more support with commercialisation and structures, we want to see them be self-sustaining, and we can only achieve that by empowering them with knowledge and skills,” he noted.
The National Rugby 7s side winning the African title in 2022 is one of Kayangwe's achievements in his tenure.
Uganda's national women's rugby side, the Lady Cranes, returned to the international scene when they hosted the Rugby Africa Women's cup in 2022 is another.
But, unfortunately, the Lady Cranes didn't advance to the next stage.
Kayangwe, who was voted into office in August 2019, overcoming Kyambogo University's Ivan Ssemuwemba 44-9 in a one-sided contest, will now be up against close ally Phillip Kiboijana who announced his intention to run for the union presidency earlier this month.

Kiboijana says the motivation to contest stems from several factors he has observed over the years that need to be corrected.
