Uganda Rugby Cranes Sevens captain Michael Wokorach has praised the team’s performance on Day One of the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
The Uganda Rugby Cranes Sevens concluded Day One action of the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series with a comprehensive win over Jamaica Thursday afternoon.
Playing in cold conditions at the Markotter Stadium, the team got the job done by defeating Brazil 33-05 and Jamaica 33-10 in the pool games.
Adrian Kasito (1), Aaron Ofoyrwoth (2) and Nobert Okeny (1) scored for Uganda in the opening game to ease past Brazil.
A penalty try was awarded to the African champions after a Brazilian defender intentionally knocked the ball forward to stop a try-scoring opportunity.
The clash with Jamaica had Uganda on the back foot after conceding from kickoff, but the team recovered to a comfortable victory in the end.
It was a tricky start for Uganda, who found themselves trailing following a Jamaica try from kickoff.
Kasito and Okeny scored a brace each, while Timothy Kisiga added another try to help Uganda to a second victory.

RUGBY Uganda Sevens off the mark in World Rugby Challenger Series
Up next for Uganda is a clash with Jamaica Thursday afternoon to conclude Day One action.
“It has been a good day for us. We won two in two with a good score,” Wokorach noted after the two games.
“We had a very good performance, and we are trying to enjoy our rugby,” he added.
“We stuck to our structure and game plan, and everything went well for us.”
Uganda still have to play Korea Republic in their last pool game on Friday before finding out whether they make it to the knockout stages.
The World Challenger Series provides a pathway to the HSBC World Rugby Series Circuit, something Uganda has been pushing to get to since 2017 when they played in the World Series Qualifier in Hong Kong.
Wokorach expects a tough Day Two as the team looks to make the quarters and eventually go all the way in the competition.
“Tomorrow is going to be tough as well because we have one more game in the pool stages.”
Before the tournament kicked off, head coach Tolbert Onyango revealed that the team would focus on getting past the quarter-final stage and into the semis.
