The Uganda Rugby Cranes Sevens have defeated Italy 19-15 to finish fifth at the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

A brace of tries from Denis Etwau and one by Aaron Ofoyrwoth helped Uganda get over the line in a tight contest Friday afternoon.

Ofoyrwoth and William Nkore added two conversions for Uganda to end the tournament on a high.

Having started the tournament with three wins in Pool C, Uganda’s journey to the top hit a snag against Germany in the quarters.

Tolbert Onyango’s charges defeated Brazil, Jamaica and Korea 7s in the group games.

Their run was, however, halted by Germany in the quarter-finals, a 26-14 defeat enough to end the team’s chase for a place in the semis.

The World Challenger Series provides a pathway to the HSBC World Rugby Series Circuit, and Uganda has been pushing to get in since 2017, when they played in the World Series Qualifier in Hong Kong.
