The move has come about due to changes in Twitter's policies.

Former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo is among hundreds of celebrities who have lost their Twitter verification badges in recent weeks, a process the social media company began on April 1.

Ronaldo, who has a total of 108.3 million followers on Twitter, had his badge stripped off today, Friday, April 21.

Other football stars affected include Paris Saint-Germain forwards Neymar and Kylian Mbappe who have 62 million and 12.2 million followers respectively. Manchester City forward Erling Halaand has also lost his verification badge with 4.6 million followers on Twitter.

The blue verification badge on the Twitter app signifies credibility and authenticity, indicating that an account is verified by Twitter as legitimate.

The loss of the blue check mark has been attributed to changes in Twitter's verification process, which now requires accounts to meet a specific set of criteria to be eligible for verification including having an active subscription to Twitter Blue.

An individual is also expected to meet specific requirements related to the account's profile photo, display name, and activity on the platform. Elon Musk recently began charging $8 per month for verification through Twitter Blue.
