‘We did not speak for 2 days. He's so selfish'- Deeney reminds Nigerians that Super Eagles star Ighalo was ‘selfish’ against Manchester United

Jermain Defoe and Troy Deeney's podcast, Football Firsts, explores the successful relationships they had throughout their playing careers.

Deeney, a forward for Watford, recounts a humorous incident from his time playing with Super Eagles of Nigeria star Odion Ighalo.

Deeney tells Defoe about Ighalo’s selfishness Odion Ighalo's support for Manchester United led to their defeat against the Red Devils at Old Trafford in 2016, according to Troy Deeney

Ighalo missed a chance to give the Hornets the victory on March 2, 2016, at Old Trafford, as he eventually realized his childhood dream of playing for the English giants.

Ighalo could have squared a pass to Deeney for Watford to win the game but hit David De Gea.

He said, "I will never forget when we played Manchester United away in 2016. Ighalo was a huge United fan, he used to wear the shirt to training sessions.

"We got to Old Trafford and he's already taken millions of pictures before the game.

"During the game he had so many opportunities to score. Twice he hit the side of the netting, the third time he's squaring and I'm set to tap it in. But he half shoots, half passes and the ball rolls to De Gea.

"He wouldn't look at me for the next hour. We lost the game and Juan Mata scored 1-0 in the 98th minute.

"The team flew back and I drove, all the way back from Manchester. I was so angry, the coach set up a meeting between us both and Ighalo explained that he just wanted to score against United so badly.”

According to Deeney, he did not speak to Ighalo for a couple of days as they departed the stadium separately.
