Uganda's long-distance runner Jacob Kiplimo made his track debut at the 5,000m race at the Oslo Diamond League meeting in Norway on Thursday evening.

Kiplimo posted a historic 12:41.73, marking the fifth-fastest time ever recorded in a race with a dramatic finish.

In the home stretch, Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha beat Kiplimo by the tiniest of margins, about a thousandth of a second, in a photo-finish as both recorded the same time with Kiplimo granted a second place.

The lucrative Diamond League races have a cash pool of $25,000 (about Shs92 million), of which $10,000 (about Shs37 million) goes to the race winner, $6,000 (about Shs22m) to second place.

In contrast, third place earns $3,500 (about Shs13m), up to the eighth position in respective order.

The biggest cash prizes go to the World Record breakers, who are guaranteed $50,000 (about Shs184m).

By finishing in second place, Kiplimo automatically qualified for Shs22m, plus other bonuses from his sponsors and management.
