Human rights lawyer and the boss of Chapter Four Uganda, Nicholas Opiyo, says he gave up an imported gift, a personalized Manchester United third kit, over unfair taxation.
Opiyo narrated that a friend sent him a personalized Manchester United jersey via courier, DHL, only to be slapped with a Shs400,000 charge by the Uganda Revenue Authority.
According to Opiyo, the jersey costs 70 pounds (about Shs330,000).
"A friend gifted me a personalized Third Manchester United jersey for the 2023/2024 season. He sent it via DHL. URA is asking me to pay 400,000 UGX in tax for a shirt worth 70 pounds," Opio stated on X before adding.
"I’ve told them to give the shirt to the Commissioner General of URA to wear."
"The prowl-taxing tactics of the authority have to be pointed out. I will not be exploited like that. No," Opio added.
The Adidas Manchester United 2023-2024 third jersey is mostly off-white with red accents.
Its design features just the iconic red devil emblem replacing the Man United crest, adding surprise and intrigue to the shirt.
