Super Falcons lose to Brazil
The Women's Olympic Football Tournament got off to a thrilling start on Thursday, but despite the Super Falcons' bravery and guts, Gabi Nunes' 37th-minute goal separated the two-time silver medallists from the nine-time African champs.
Nigeria's flag flew at a tournament for the first time in sixteen years as Rasheedat Ajibade guided the Falcons onto the Stade Matmut Atlantique field.
A double-barreled attempt on the Brazilian goal, started by Ajibade, resulted in a blocked shot from Chinwendu Ihezuo and a punched away effort from Christy Ucheibe.
In the 71st minute, Ajibade forced another deft stop from the Brazilian goalie, and in the last minutes, Ucheibe did the same.
However, the Canarinhas managed to win all three points against the Super Falcons.
Spain preview
Over the past year or so, the Spanish women's national team, also known as La Roja, has been a major player in conversations about women's football.
La Roja's history dates back to the 1980s, and they will be hoping to add to their list of honors in the 2024 Olympics.
Their incredible 2023 World Cup victory and management of their national team squad have taken them to the spotlight

Spain beat Japan
On day one of the women's football competition at La Beaujoire Stadium in Nantes, France, world champions Spain overcame a goal deficit to defeat Japan 2-1.
After 13 minutes, La Roja trailed to a spectacular free kick by Aoba Fujino, but they quickly rallied and were tied less than ten minutes later thanks to Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati.
Japan's attacking threat diminished during the second half. However, they held firm as Spain controlled the ball and had multiple opportunities until the 74th minute of the Group C opening, when Bonmati skillfully set up Mariona Caldentey for the game-winning goal with a one-two.
Spain would hold on to claim all three points in their opener.
Spain's strengths and key players
One of the best midfielders in the world, according to many, is Aitana Bonmati as she has unparalleled technical skill.
Some would argue that since she won the 2023 Ballon d'Or Feminin, reaching the final should be the least of Spain's goals as world champions.
Nigeria's chances against Spain
Nigeria has demonstrated that they can overcome setbacks and achieve remarkable achievements, even though they lost their first game.
However, it will now be extremely difficult for them to advance out of the group following their loss to Brazil in the first game.
Super Falcons vs Spain preview
The 33rd Olympiad Women's Olympic Football Tournament will feature a matchup between European powerhouse Spain and African heavyweights Nigeria on Sunday. Both teams enter the contest with very different results from their opening games.
The nine-time African champions were defeated by Brazil with an own goal, and they will need to win all three points on Sunday to revive their hopes of qualifying for the round of eight.
Meanwhile, the world champions defeated fierce Japan 2-1 to take first place in Group C with three points.
Coach Randy Waldrum might stick with the lineup that faced Brazil on Thursday because there are no injuries in camp.
However, Michelle Alozie might start at left back to give Nicole Payne—who came on strong against the South Americans—room to operate on the right side of defense.
Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade spoke to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on what the team needs to do against Spain.
Ajibade who plays for Atletico Madrid in Spain says they will need to convert the chances they missed against Spain in their second group game.
