Pulse Sports Nigeria journalist Hassan Abdulsalam bags prestigious award

Hassan Abdulsalam of Pulse Sports Nigeria has been recognised for his incredible coverage of grassroots sports in Nigeria.

Pulse Sports Nigeria journalist Hassan Abdulsalam has been honoured as one of the winners of the first edition of the Nigerian Sports Journalists in Diaspora (NSJID) award.

Hassan Abdulsalam, who covers grassroots sports, has been outstanding on the job, hence the recognition that his efforts have now received.

He was rightly named the winner of the Nigerian Sports Journalists in Diaspora (NSJID) for Grassroots Sports Reporting [Online/Social Media category].

Hassan’s elaborate report on the Pains of Nigeria’s Para-Athletes won him the award ahead of Samuel Ahmadu and Najafooty.

What Hassan said

Reacting after the award, the former AIPS/FISU young reporter revealed the importance of recognition in reporting grassroots sports.

He said, "It was a pleasure to have won the Online/Social Media category, this award is a big statement to the power of grassroots sports reporting, and I'm honored to be a part of it.

“Starting out by reporting on campus sports helped shape my passion for promoting grassroots sports and I am excited to continue shining lights on the incredible stories and talent emerging from this sector.

“This award will only spur me on to do more, and I'm grateful to the Nigerian Sports Journalists in Diaspora for this recognition and to all my colleagues at Pulse Sports Nigeria for making it possible,” he concluded.

Other award winners

Other winners include Cecilia Omoregbe, who won the TV category; Maxwell Lawrence won the radio category, and Jacob Ajom won the print category.

The award was a ground-breaking initiative by NSJID and is designed to unearth hidden Nigerian grassroots sports news.

The chairman of the Award Committee, Chief Gboyega Okegbenro, applauded the good works of the journalists propagating grassroots sports.

He said, “This is to celebrate Nigerian journalists that are doing incredible work to promote grassroots sports.”

The NSJID is headed by Mr. Gbenga Bakare, with Eyobong Ita as Vice Chairman and Deji Sodeinde as Secretary. The award committee is headed by Okegbenro, other members include Tony Ubani, Adekunle Salami, Blessing Nwosu, Raheem Olatunji, John Atale, Robinson Okosun, Sàni Zaria, and Yemi Ojo.
