Super Eagles vs Equatorial Guinea preview
Equatorial Guinea enters this tournament with a strong nine-match unbeaten streak across all competitions.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria however are heavily favored to start their AFCON group campaign with a victory here.
Super Eagles favored against Equatorial Guinea
Just before the competition got underway, Guinea defeated Nigeria 2-0 on Monday, a disheartening result but the Super Eagles will aim to bounce back in style.
The previous seven-game unbeaten streak by Nigeria in all competitions, which includes three consecutive AFCON qualifiers won, must have pleased coach Jose Peseiro going to the AFCON.
The Super Eagles will feel more confident after victories against teams like Sao Tome & Principe 6-0, Sierra Leone 3-2, and Guinea-Bissau 1-0.
Goals have also been a factor; in four of Nigeria's previous eight games overall, there have been more than 2.5 goals scored.
Three times before, the most recent being in 2013, Nigeria emerged victorious from the Africa Cup of Nations trophy.
They have also proven to be a reliable performer on this stage, placing in the final four no fewer than fifteen times.
Nigerians will be led by players such as Victor Osimhen, who became the first African to top the Serie A goalscoring standings.
Equatorial Guinea as AFCON Dark Horses
Equatorial Guinea, who have achieved a promising nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions that consists of five victories and four draws, could emerge as a potential dark horse in Group A as they continue to make positive progress under coach Juan Micha.
Before its Group A opening against Nigeria, the Nzalang Nacional's recent record has some good momentum.
Recent World Cup qualifying triumphs over Namibia and Liberia, respectively, have reinforced wins in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying stage over Botswana (both at home and away), and most notably, a 1-0 victory at home against Tunisia that Equatorial Guinea are a serious team.
In the grand scheme of things, Equatorial Guinea has only lost once in their previous 12 games overall.
However, when it comes to their performance at the actual Africa Cup of Nations, they have been inconsistent, winning just five of their last 13 games while losing six of them.
Still, Equatorial Guinea will be trying to take down Nigeria on Sunday afternoon after pulling off an impressive 1-0 victory over highly-favored Algeria in the previous year's competition.
Key players for Super Eagles vs Equatorial Guinea
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have won all three of their previous meetings with Equatorial Guinea, giving them the upper hand.
In the week before their AFCON debut, Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface was forced out of José Peseiro's Nigerian team due to injury.
Terem Moffi, a striker for Nice who has six goals this season in Ligue 1, will take Boniface's place.
The Super Eagles can still rely on Victor Osimhen of Napoli, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Samuel Chukwueze to score goals as Nottingham Forest's Taiwo Awoniyi was already out of the game.
However, they have only won one of their last five international games (four draws and one loss), and they are now on a three-game winless streak.
Victor Osimhen is anticipated to participate and has scored in four of his last six international games.
