Despite breaking his record, Osimhen is full of praise for former Liberia striker George Weah.
Victor Osimhen, a forward for Napoli and the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has responded to his most recent goal-breaking milestone.
Osimhen now has more goals scored by an African player in the Italian Serie A than former Ballon d'Or winner George Weah.
On Sunday night, the 24-year-old converted a penalty to score Napoli's lone goal in their 1-0 victory over Fiorentina, giving him 47 Serie A goals overall, one more than Weah's 46.
The former Liberia international held the record till Osimhen broke it by scoring 46 goals for AC Milan between the 1995–1996 and 1999–2000 seasons.
Osimhen's most recent achievement is all the more impressive because he did so in fewer games than Weah scored 47 goals in 79 appearances than Weah, who held the record with 46 goals in 114 Serie A games.
Osimhen's message to Weah
He celebrated Weah with a message on social media with a statement that said, "While Growing Up, I Have Always Admired The Great Achievements Of So Many African Legends And His Excellency Mr GEORGE WEAH Is One Of Them, An Icon In The World Of Football And Also A Leader To His People.
"Someone Who Has Motivated And Inspired Millions Of Young Talents Alike.
"Yesterday, It Was Great Honor Breaking His Record As The Top Scoring African Player In Serie A History, An Achievement I will Forever Cherish, Mr George Weah Has Set A Foundation Of Excellence For Individuals Like Me To Emulate And His Legacy Will Forever Be Remembered.
"I Celebrate This Milestone With Everyone Who Has Inspired And Supported Me In This Journey. Thank You For Your Contributions, GOD IS THE GREATEST."
The former Lille forward has had a standout season, breaking Samuel Eto'o's record for the most goals scored by an African player in a single Serie A season.
Osimhen has been ranked by Serie A behind teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for Napoli.
He is also on the verge of becoming the first African to win the Paolo Rossi Award, the league's top scorer honor.
