Some Chelsea fans believe the club is selling expensive potatoes to fund their lavish spending spree this summer.

Chelsea fans have unleashed their fury after discovering that the club is charging an eye-watering ₦15,000 (£7.50) for a small portion of curry potatoes at Stamford Bridge.

Daily Star reports that many supporters believe that the exorbitant food prices are being used to fund the club’s lavish spending spree, which includes a potential move for Napoli's star striker, Victor Osimhen

The controversial pricing has now become a hot topic among fans, particularly after a lacklustre pre-season match against Inter Milan on August 11, where the overpriced dish was served.

The masala potatoes, described by one disgruntled fan as “a potato with sprinkled spices,” were served in a simple brown cardboard tray, with the portion size failing to justify the high cost.

Images of the meagre offering quickly circulated online, igniting a wave of criticism from supporters who feel the club is exploiting their loyalty to bankroll expensive signings.

One fan sarcastically commented, “£7.50 for a potato with sprinkled spices, most expensive bag of crisps ever.”

While another added, “No wonder they can afford to buy 30 players a window.”

The backlash over the overpriced food comes at a time when Chelsea’s spending under the ownership of Todd Boehly and the Clearlake Capital group is under intense scrutiny.

Since taking over in 2022, the new regime has spent over £1 billion on new players, with nine additions already made this summer, including Pedro Neto’s £54 million move from Wolves. Now, the club has set its sights on securing Victor Osimhen, further fuelling fan frustration over how their hard-earned money is being spent.

New manager Enzo Maresca is under pressure to deliver results, especially after a disappointing season where Chelsea finished sixth in the Premier League and failed to qualify for the Champions League.

The Blues have raised expectations by making some costly signings, but the growing discontent among fans suggests that the club's financial strategy is still a concern for their loyal supporters.

Chelsea open their 2024/24 Premier League campaign against defending champions Manchester City on Saturday, August 17, at Stamford Bridge.

The West London club would be hopeful of grinding out a positive result in their first official game under their new coach.
