Angella Okutoyi has won gold at African Games making history as first Kenyan woman victor in 46 years.

Tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi triumphed at the African Games in Ghana, securing Kenya's fifth gold by defeating Egypt’s Lamis Abdelaziz with an impressive score of 6-4, 6-2 in the tennis final.

At just 20 years old, Okutoyi has made history as the first Kenyan woman to win this prestigious title in nearly half a century, since Jane Davies-Doxzon's victory back in 1978.

This monumental win not only places Okutoyi in the annals of Kenya’s sports history but also paves her way towards an Olympic dream, contingent upon her breaking into the top 400 rankings.

In the semifinals, Okutoyi faced off against Egypt’s Mayar Sherif, a global tennis powerhouse ranked 70th worldwide. The match extended over an epic duration of 4 hours and 27 minutes, with Sherif snatching the first set 7-5.

Undeterred, Okutoyi claimed the second set 7-5 and edging out Sherif in a nail-biting third set 7-6.

Leading up to the semifinals, Okutoyi showcased her dominance on the court, starting with a first-round bye.

She then went on to defeat Zambia’s Naomi Chileshe and Egypt’s Mostafa Rafaat with identical scores of 6-6, 3-1, and 6-6, 3-3, respectively.

Her victory over Morocco’s Aya Elaouni with a score of 6-6, 4-4 secured her place in the semi-finals, setting the stage for her historic win.

Okutoyi's achievements extend beyond the African Games.

She has previously etched her name in history as the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title at the girls’ juniors Wimbledon, partnering with Rose Marie of the Netherlands.

The duo overcame Kayla Cross and Victoria Mboko of Canada with a score of 3-6, 6-4.

Moreover, Okutoyi also holds the distinction of being the first Kenyan to win a girls’ junior single Grand Slam match at the 2022 Australian Open.
