The UCU Lady Doves made headlines over the weekend as they clinched the championship title of Serie B in the National Volleyball League, securing their promotion back to the top flight in impressive fashion.
It was a remarkable journey for the Lady Doves, who had suffered a painful relegation to the second division in the previous season.
For captain Evas Nayebare, watching her team fall to the second tier was a painful experience, as she was far away doing her internship and couldn't do anything to help.
"It was heartbreaking to see the team go down to Serie B, and I felt like I couldn't do anything to help. However, that experience was a clear motivation heading into this season.", Nayebare said.
Under the leadership of head coach Juma Osunge, the Lady Doves set their sights on reaching the playoffs and securing promotion back to the top tier.
Osunge had high hopes for the team and said, "We had a tight-knit group that I believed had the right quality to win as many games as possible and secure us promotion." The Lady Doves worked tirelessly to improve their game and prepare for the season.
Osunge explained, "To prepare adequately and stay ready, we have had to do some scouting on the teams in Serie A to be ready for next season.
The team focused on improving their tactics, technique, and fitness levels, with Osunge adding, "We are looking at getting more additions to the squad, and some of them are already training with us as the squad needs to get better."
The Lady Doves' hard work paid off as they dominated the competition in Serie B, winning all their matches except for one, which they lost in a closely contested game.
In the finals, they faced KUVC, a team that had been their most formidable opponent throughout the season.
The Lady Doves showed their resilience and determination, winning game two(25-18, 25-17, 25-20) and securing their promotion back to the top tier.
UCU sports administrator Sam Lukaire expressed his pride in the team's achievements and said, "We are happy as an administration to have the team back in the top flight, and we will continue to support them even more next season as they try and achieve more."
For Nayebare and her teammates, the hard work had only just begun.
But, Nayebare emphasized, "We have to work even harder than we did this season, as the teams will be stronger than last season, and we have to be ready."
