KCB-Nkumba’s Tony Lakony retains his role as head coach and will be assisted by Bart Muting and Mariam Nakamanya.

The last time the national women’s volleyball team played was in the 2019 Zone V All Africa Games Qualifiers.

Four years later, the team will be back in action after a hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and financial difficulties.

Uganda Volleyball Federation president Sadik Nasiwu and his assistant Ahmed Kigundu revealed the group of coaches to handle the team ahead of the qualifiers slated for June.

KCB-Nkumba’s Tony Lakony retains his role as head coach and will be assisted by Bart Muting and Mariam Nakamanya.

Nakamanya, a former Volleyball Cranes player, is the new face to the coaching team and is one seen as a future head coach.

Players summoned

The team will have enough time for training before the qualifiers. 20 players have been summoned for the start and will start training every Tuesday of the week for the next six weeks at the International School of Uganda in Lubowa.

It is a predominantly new team with just a few experienced faces on the side, something the head coach says is inevitable because of the height problem that Uganda needs to solve.

“We are looking at players with height advantage to give ourselves a good chance,” Lakony told Pulse Sports at the team naming press conference held Monday morning at the Old Kampala Arena.

Joan Tushemereirwe, Moreen Mwamula, Eunice Amuron, Doreen Akiteng and Margaret Namyalo are some of the few experienced players summoned in the first lot.

The team will keep changing, according to players’ performances in the league.

“The window is still open for all and this is not the final team,” Lakony added.

KCCA’s Ketty Aluka, Ndejje Elites’ Catherine Ainembabazi and OBB’s Hadija Otim are some of the players who have been rewarded for their league form with call ups.
